I installed a hard-wired inverter this past fall. I connected the shore power feed and the inverter output through an automatic transfer switch. The converter is always left off, unless I have a really good reason to turn it on - solar keeps the batteries charged just fine. (The converter has its own breaker, so turning it on/off is just a matter of flipping the breaker.)
I switch the refrigerator over to propane (where it also normally is anyway), and anything else that would draw too much power we just don't use (almost nothing in our trailer - I removed the AC and microwave to save weight as we rarely camp with shore power).
