When running alternating current you run solid wire , when running direct current you run stranded . Why ?

Not really. Wire that flexes gets stranded. Like a 120vac extension cord. Fixed wire tends to be solid. Large wire tends to have some stranding for flexibility. Can you imagine 4/0 solid copper :E
