A friend uses a big contractor style generator a lot in his contracting business, often in close proximity to other homes.

He built a large plywood box to house the unit that is lined with sound deadening material and is fairly tall, this kills much of the sound going sideways and directs what's left straight up.

I must say, it's really pretty quiet even within close range.
