To add to this discussion, I have an '03 CTD. Tha manual specifically states that the engine should be up to normal operating temperature before strenuous loads are placed on the engine.
To me a strenuous load would be(for me) towing our 30ft fuver that weighs just under12,000lbs when empty. Closer to 13,500 loaded.
I know most people don't like to listen to a diesel idling away, but I would rather annoy a couple of nieghbours on the short term than risk damage to my engine.
