Just blocking off that 3" gap on the sides will help a lot. Instead of air flowing up through the fins on the back of the unit, which is needed for cooling, it's taking the path of least resistance and flowing up uselessly along the sides. Then make sure the rear clearance is correct, if too much, the same thing happens, and the fins don't get properly cooled.
