Landyacht, if your read mr. Kollmanns blogs/archives - a bit messy, but he knows his stuff - longer duty cycle at slower speed is the best. But consumers don't like it when it runs almost non-stop, so it's factory preset to certain speed they consider optimal for a given box and compressor. While playing with this speed board could be an interesting research, you could probably achieve same good efficiency with added 3" styrene insulation on all 5 sides, plus something like carpet tile on the door. The best models have 4" insulation, there is no improvement with 5", reportedly. Yours probably has 1.5" foam in walls already. Here is the link to guy that insulated Isotherm cr-130 in a van. A model bigger than yours, but same BD35 compressor. He used 2*0.75" styrene sheets, 1.5" total thickness - I think he didn't have room for more.
Btw, 38F is damn cold. 40F is what FDA recommends, as I recall. Canadian authority recommends 4C, which is 39F. 1 or 2 degrees F does make a difference in current draw.
Check Novakool, volume from 59L to 122L. 59L = 2.1 cu.ft. Condenser is spanning the back of the fridge, and has no forced cooling. Same Danfoss BD35 compressor (BD50 I only saw on models from 5 cu.ft and up). Compressor fan can still be there, Novakool considers it optional on these models.

I have been in contact with 3 others with 49 to 51 liter models of Vitrifrigo, Truckfridge and Isotherm(non asu) units and all the fans were of different brands and cfm (32 to 65) ratings, yet all the coldplates and condensers are The same size and they all use no resistor in the thermostat circuit.
