i think it makes an excellent substitute for a PWM controller for a full timer

the ability to adjust the output voltage to say a constant 14.2 ( no float mode, not to be used for storage or week end only campers )
and the low cost, makes an excellent backup or replacement

for storage it could be adjusted to 13.6v or less
