Install 50A Outlet at Electric Meter

My electric meter is stand alone on a post close to my driveway where my 5th wheel is parked, near the left rear RV corner in my sig picture. I originally thought about having a 20a outlet installed there for my 30a RV for easy of plugging in and maybe running the AC on muggy days. I have no AC in the house and currently run the heaviest extension cord I could find to do this, but it is in harm's way where it can be run over by delivery trucks or lawn mowers. It occurred to me that I could probably have a 50a outlet installed at the meter instead for the incremental cost of parts and labor. Then I would use a 50a to 30a adapter for my current RV and have a 50a outlet for a future RV.
How big a deal is it to install an outlet at an electric meter? Obviously, the electric company will be involved to shut off power and reconnect, and I would provide the electrician with a 50a RV wiring diagram.

  • The meter is on a pedestal, but the panel is in the basement of my house 100' away. I think there is room for a small breaker box. And I think the meter socket can be replaced with a socket with breakers.
  • Most electrical meter pedestals have a customer service door which has a buss bar and fuses/breakers. You can tap into the pedestal here. The pedestal also has a sealed entrance for the power company's inlet hot feed. A decent electrician should be able to set you up for a reasonable cost.
  • Hard to tell from your description but it might be possible. Where is the electrical panel?

The receptacle will have to be fed from a panel.

Probably no need for the power company involvement. Any electrician could do the work as is. To be legal it will require a building/electrical permit.
  • I did my own wire feed with #6 wire and a double 50 amp breaker from my electrical panel outside and made my own pedestal to attach the 50 amp rv box too.
  • I suspect the electric company where I live would want more than just a 50 outlet installed. There are all sorts of rules that needs must be followed. If you find someone who will break those rules, then your home insurance may be invalid.
