Don't break the tube off, it will compromise the weld and may cause a leak. I'd soak the old element and tube with PBlaster to break the bond and remove it.

Sorry, Strapping outside the sleeves will NOT work. You need the weld/inset tube solid contac to transmit the needed BTU's of the Heat Element to the boiler flue. Now, if you can get it beside the old insert sleeves, it may work. Doug
I have it outside in the long vertical groove between the two sleeves, with a clamp around the whole thing. The back of the element is tight against both sleeves for most of the element's length before it curves at the top I started a cool down on AC and will report how that goes later.
The 325w element as rated, showed 304w at first on the Kill-A-Watt but quickly fell to 286w when the element warmed up, so no issue about using the 325 instead of the specified 300 rating.
