Intermittant foul water taste

I have noticed that if my water hose is exposed to bright sunlight on a hot day, the first shot out tastes like plastic. I have used 3 separate hoses, in increasing levels of quality, and still experience the phenomenon.
I put a Y-valve on the hose end next to the trailer and bleed the hose before we cook, fill ice trays or make coffee.
Anyone else notice this?

So you have to go outside to bleed it?

Yes and no, I can run water through a faucet inside, but that puts more water into my gray tank. So if I know the hose has been in the sun for a few hours, I'll bleed hose at the water inlet before it enters the trailer's system.

I use a filter and still have the hose taste. Can't be an aeration problem because the taste only occurs when the hose has been directly in the sun. A hot day in the shade produces no effect.
  • That taste can be due to the lack of air, too. Water goes flat when confined in a hose, especially in warm weather. Once it's moving, it's aerated and taste improves. To see if that could be a cause, fill a cup of that first water, then aerate by pouring it back and forth between cups a few times. Taste. If it's better, you've found the cause which is of course nothing to worry about.

Doesn't make that first flow more palatable, but at least you know you're not eating plastic!

Filters will "treat" this problem, too, if you're still concerned- just being forced through causes enough turbulence to re-aerate the water.
  • X 2 on using a filter. We use a two stage filter between the hose and the RV water inlet...no plastic taste.
  • We use one of these between the hose and the water inlet on the trailer. No water hose taste. Cheap, effective, and simply replace it at the beginning of the season.
