Because the WH is connected to both sides of the plumbing system, it can pressurize the cold side too.
That said, I would still figure out exactly where the leak is located, and fix it. Nothing else leaks, right? There's a weak point there somewhere, and even if it goes away after you re-establish the air space in the WH, it could start up again at any time.
