Hi,
You can run all the time from the inverter if the converter is big enough to handle the extra load. Powering this way is called double conversion and it is not terribly efficient. I found it extremely useful before I upgraded to a hybrid inverter.
I prefer to not use a transfer switch so I installed a female outlet powered from the inverter into which I plug the shore power cord.
