The ideal gassing voltage would be when there is 1 bubble per second. Going too high in voltage may cause extra shaling from the positive plates.
You want to "dance on the needles" for the most "bang for the buck".
Mex has given you wonderful guide lines to follow. Ignore them at your peril.
