Yes, junk gets behind and all around the blade within the valve body. It gets in along the edges beyond the seal. The seals are not damaged and are not even contacting the blade in the open position.
In the photo, the seal is shown with no contact. The top seal is removed. The "stuff" simply goes into the space seen and will flow all the way back. Seals and seal condition has nothing to do with the problem.
