All pickup diesel trucks have two batteries as far as I know (please correct me if I'm wrong). Normally you would not expect both to die at the same time. I have successfully jumped a Duramax with one of the portable battery packs because one truck battery was still good. So I think it's a good idea. It's also surprising to me how many times I've used it to jump co-worker's, family, or friend's cars. Even jumped someone's car at the local grocery store once. Have also used the built-in light when I had to change a tire at night. Very handy things to have around.
I got one from Sears - I think it was the largest one they sell. Got it on sale for a pretty good price, which I don't remember. The thing I like about it is that it has a replaceable battery, so I don't have to buy the whole thing if only the battery dies. Yes, I know it might be cheaper to buy a new one if that happens . . . .
I also carry along a Craftsman 150PSI compressor that's not too large.
