Exactly what my dealer did a few years ago with our previous K-Z Spree when I had him swap out the crappy Carefree of Colorado awning that came with the trailer for a manual Dometic 8500. The mounting holes were in different locations so the tech filled them with clear ProFlex lap sealant and stuck in a plastic plug with a cap to fill the gap. All that could be seen were the small caps and I never had any leakage issues at all. Wouldn't ever use silicone on the exterior of my trailer though - not ever.
