Kohler 7000 LP Generator Service

I am in need of service on my RV's generator and I am striking out so far.

I recently purchased a 1991 Monaco Dynasty that has a Kohler 7000 LP generator. I believe the generator portion of the 7000 to be working correctly ... when I get the generator to turn over and run (which is about 1 attempt out of 30), I am able to measure 240V output @ 60.3 Hz.

I believe the issue to be that for some reason, the engine either isn't getting fuel or isn't detonating the fuel correctly. Occasionally I smell propane, but only infrequently, and the smell is very subtle. I have replaced both spark plugs, but that didn't fix the problem.

I am mechanically inclined, but propane engines are a bit outside my realm of expertise. I have been trying to find someone to service the generator, but have struck out so far. I am located in central Maryland. Does anyone have a mechanic they can recommend for working on LP engines and/or Kohler generators?

Engine Details:
Engine Model: K582EP
Spec Number: 36382
Engine Serial: 2013504945

Or ... instead of a mechanic recommendation, does anyone have any tips on sources of the problem(s) and how to resolve it/them?

Thanks in advance!

  • Blame the refiner the odorant they use is petroleum.oil based. LPG scours valves and pumps in the refinery. So they use off-spec oil as a lube. I chose cotton media LPG filters as the oil and slag remover.
  • Sounds similar to LP regulator failure on my friends View. Are there issues with the other LP appliances? Would start after 3-5 tries....run briefly ...die. Same with fridge and WH....

Oil contamination in LP tank/regulator seems to be epidemic.....
  • Your large round LP pressure regulator is probably gummed up with residual oil that has separated out of the LPG over the operating life of the generator set. Remove the regulator, disassemble and clean. A small amount of gasoline works good to remove that oil contamination. Use the gasoline sparingly and outdoors away from ignition sources. Usually after cleaning up a regulator this way the generator will start right away. A change of spark plugs and properly gapping the new ones can't hurt either.
  • Going back many, many years in memory I think the biggest problem may be what is known as a zero flow regulator. This only allows flow if there is a vacuum in the engine manifold. This is to shut off flow if the engine quits for whatever reason. On a single stand-alone engine, a very good idea but on a genset with a control panel that shuts the fuel solenoid electrically it is sort of redundant (and a real PITA). If the unit has a low cranking speed or is worn a bit the start vacuum will be too low to operate this regulator. Look for a control on the fuel line that has a small spring loaded push plunger on it. Holding this in will allow fuel to flow (providing all else is in good order) for starting.
    Art.
  • Time to call the nearest LPG DISTRIBUTOR the place that operates the bulk trucks and highway tankers. Folks who set residential and commercial LPG tanks.

If you're surrounded by natural gas you may have to go on a short journey.

    But

These folks will know of talented Imco carburetion specialists and small engine repair shops. This is from a many times at the School of Hard Knocks experience with LPG. Don't balk at them suggesting the engine be given a compression test. LPG and valves don't get along too well.

The future savings in fuel economy alone makes this seeming hassle worth it.
  • Yup ... the Kohler repair facilities/contractors indicate they now only do fixed residential / commercial generator repair/maintenance/service. I've called a couple of small engine repair shops, and they indicate they do not service LP engines.

Getting the generator repaired is really the only option for me. While I'd love to have a new generator, its not in the cards financially. I am quite surprised that I am having trouble getting service on a Kohler generator...

Any suggestions folks have would be more than helpful. I am a bit lost at this point.
  • Did you search for repair facilities for your brand of generator?
