I used a microswitch with a long springy wire as sensor. The switch is mounted on an L shaped metal bracket that is screwed into the wood above the step.

I tried a magnetic switch first but it was very sensitive to the distance between the switch and the step. There was just too much side to side play in the step to make the magnetic switch useful.
Maybe a light and photocell sensor was used in your setup. If so, check for mud obscuring them.
