I have had a similar problem with my Dell laptop. When the battery is low, I will plug it in. I will get an error message that there is 'no battery.' The laptop will function but the battery will not charge. To fix it, I reboot my laptop and it runs fine and the battery 'reappears' and charges. I think it is a laptop power management/battery issue. It typically only happens when the battery is low and I plug the power cord in while the laptop is functioning. It is ghost problem, only happening once every few months, so I ignore it. Good luck with your problem.
