Sounds like you got ahold of some junk. I replaced the old incandescents in my guys-weekend-in-the-woods-boondocking PUP with flat panels, and they've performed flawlessly.

With all due respect, a statement like that is like saying I'm never buying another car again because the last one I bought was a lemon.

There are so many different manufacturers you wouldn't believe it, and the quality between varies widely.

We weren't talking about absolute brightness, but efficiency. That is, how bright they are for a certain amount of power. 5630s are NOT supposed to be brighter than the 5050 - those numbers ONLY indicate the physical form factor, they imply nothing about efficiency or maximum brightness.

But, yeah, it's rare that a manufacturer of LED replacement lamps says exactly which LED they're using, and I wouldn't trust their brightness numbers, so it's hard to compare them other than side-by-side.

At the end of the day it's all about how the LED is driven= how bright. Just because the ratings are 'x', doesn't mean the design engineer is going to drive it that hard. I have several LED strips, 2ea. 5050, and 3ea. 5630, but from different places. Even the like strips don't match as the ballast resistors are different on the strips. 5630's are supposed to be brighter than the 5050, but not either of these

All the radial style LED's I've bought with the T10 Wedge base, well the 5730s are brighter than the 5050's and consume more or less the same current.

From that wiki chart I saw the 3030 smds numbers as very impressive, and found one LED bulb for a t10 application and it was retina searingly bright, but burnt out all too soon from the lack of heatsinking in constant use and I was refunded my money.

I like to get the brightest possible, then tame them to more tolerable levels, adn amp draws with a PWM controller. Some of the bulbs whine though at 13khz.

When tamed with PWM, one can seemingly achieve 90% the brightness for 50% the current draw. Works for me.

5050/5730 designate the package size, not the performance.

Wikipedia is not an authoritative, or even good, source for technical information. And in this case, it's simply wrong. There some 5050 size LEDs which are more efficient than some 5730 size ones. e.g. the 5050 size Luxeon L150-3070502400000 produces 146 lm/w, while the 5730 size Bivar SM5730UWDW05 produces 112 lm/w. Note that both are more efficient than what the Wikipedia article says is the maximum efficiency available in either size package.

5050 SMDs are so 2012 man

Look for 5730 chipsets. More light, less heat

5050s are a maximum of 75 lumens per watt
5730s are a maximum of 90 lumens per watt

I replace nearly all of them now w/ regular shaped bulbs w/ leds stuck all over them, 5 bucks each, 4 yrs now, no failures, and just as much lite, and burn less juice.
