Let me be the guinea pig. I can easily afford to do this and report what these things really do. I'm aware of the suspected problems, but things could be getting blown out of proportion.
Li's are being installed in boats and golf carts without (so far) the seriousness of problems they're suspected of.
Sounds to me like you're ready to try lithium as long as the costs are acceptable to you. I think whats missing here is an understanding of how the different folks are planning to put together your battery management system. If it has the charge control electronics incorporated then I don't see where there is any issue. Even then, if they're doing individual cell management I don't see where you would have a cell balance issue regardless of how many batteries you use. The state of charge between the different batteries could get out of whack maybe but I don't see how it would be a negative for the individual cells unless I'm totally misunderstanding how they are planning to set the batteries up.
