FWIW:
I sized our whole house air-to-air heat pump at 40 tons for our 1950 square foot stick house - as I wanted overkill heating and cooling to be ready for anything Mother Nature could throw at us.
However, our heat pump has a variable speed main fan and variable speed scroll compressor - so it maintains it's very high efficiency ratings with any amount of heating or cooling it is called on to deliver via the wall control. All this speed variation makes it whisper quiet most of the time, too, as it can run at low speeds to deliver small amounts of maintenance air flow throughout the system so as to keep a very even temperature in the home.
I wish that RV's could have air conditioners and propane furnaces in them that performed this way. :S
