There’s only one reason I know of (in actual working practice…) to float, and that is, were I to leave the solar charger ON, say charging while out on a hike, the controller would not continue to hold the battery at 14.x…
But with a fixed voltage controller, I wouldn’t leave it ON for say an extended, unattended period…However, I have two separate solar systems (in parallel - a 400w MPPT & 260w PMW) one with a fixed controller and another with a programmable two stage with float…If charging unattended, I leave only the latter controller ON…BTW, despite lots of usage, I haven’t had the batteries up to a full 100% since mid-February, and have relied only upon harvest…:)
