I don't like strapping them down either. In fact, I never put straps on one until my latest trailer came with a power awning. Trouble is even a mild breeze or rain causes it to roll in a little and droop if I don't strap it down. Mine comes in if the wind gets up to 15mph or so.
I have seen a few people hang weights on straps instead of stakes in the ground. Probably a lot safer.
