I've had 2 regulator diaphragms fail in the last few years. One was similar to yours where I heard a slight hissing sound and occasionally got a whiff of propane. The other was more scary when the built in regulator in a Buddy Heater started leaking propane out the weep hole catching the heater on fire and melting the plastic case.
