Low voltage with ac on

I have 50 amp service at my house(wired with 6 gs wire). I am plugged in to a 30 amp surge guard with a 50 to 30 amp dogbone and 50 foot 30 amp rv power cord. Surge guard with ac on or off 120 volts, 14 amps with ac on. Multi meter inside RV 120 volts with ac off but drops to 110 when ac is on. Any ideas why voltage drops so.

  • Long run and multiple connection points would be my guess, 110Vac is still fine for AC usage although we would all prefer it to be a bit higher. Most 30 amp RV cords are around 25-30 feet, longer runs will cause excessive v-drop particularly with heavy current demand items.
  • I assssssssume the surge guard is after the cord meaning on the RV side?

  • most likely a combination of factors, but the 2 primary culprits I would suspect are that extra long run of cable and the multiple plug in connections along that run.

    Question, Chief...

In addition to the 50-ft 30A extension, is there also a shore tie cable from the RV to that extension? That is a LOT of wire, even when "correctly sized."

We camp at a lot of state parks. Many are 50A and of those, some have had their wiring recently replaced. It it's very hot (everybody running A/C), we get low voltage and breakers tripping. We like to position ourselves "just so" on the site, but lately I've decided we pretty much cannot get far enough from the power pedestal to need an extension. And our "30A RV Extensions" are only 25-ft.
    • Unplug from shore power
    • Remove circuit breaker panel cover to expose innards
    • With a screwdriver of proper size to fit the slots, check the tightness of every single screw in the box
    • Install cover and check voltage
    • If necessary repeat this operation on automatic management system
    • Every single last screw
    • Take a bit of time and look carefully for any sign of wire end overheating
