LPG Regulator

I had a new regulator installed in my truck camper. An ENERCO Model 7366 with the standard auto changeover.

I've. never used the auto changeover in all my RV'ing years as I want to know when one tank is empty.

Today I filled both tanks, when I installed the first tank, I turned on the gas before connecting the second tank (which I did all the time with the old regulator). As soon as I turned on the propane the pigtail not connected to the second tank started leaking propane. It continued to do so no matter what position the changeover switch was in.

This never happened with the prior regulator. Is this a defect? Should I be using different pigtails?

  • When disconnecting pigtail from an empty cylinder there should NOT be any propane leaking otherwise the full tank would equalize with the empty one if empty cylinder service valve was left open.

Lever swaps porting for Indicator NOT which cylinder is being used....1st one valved in denotes which cylinder is being used

LP Pigtails no not have backflow preventors (check valve to stop LP Flow back out of pigtail)
LP Regs typically have those in fittings where pigtails connect.....
If pigtail is Directly connected to REG then no backflow check valves

Pigtails have 'flow limiting' check valves to minimize flow from cylinder to RV LP System should a LEAK happen downstream of REG
  • Always a good idea to replace pigtails when you replace a regulator, as they do degrade with time.

As for the leak, I have had a couple auto changeover regulators that function just fine, including the auto changeover and red flagging when a tank runs out, BUT would leak gas if the ON tank was removed while the OFF tank was connected and valve was opened. This would happen to me when the tank got empty, and I neglected to switch the lever over to the other tank before disconnecting the empty. I have been assured by folks here that that behavior signals a bad changeover valve. But I don't buy it. Those changeover valves have been behaving that way for YEARS while otherwise functioning normally as far as I can tell.

I recommend Cavagna brand pigtails and regulator.

I also thought I heard that some pigtails have the one-way valve in them.

    YES it is defective

FLow should only be from cylinder/pigtail when that one is selected

With Auto Changeover REG...1st cylinder valved in service is PRIMARY
Reg swaps to opposite cylinder when Primary pressure drops to 10psi...which will also change Indicator from Green to RED
You then swap lever to opposite cylinder and Indicator goes back to Green

Empty cylinder can then be disconnected and removed for refill.......pigtail should NOT leak any propane when disconnected

NOTICED in picture....lever is to the left BUT indicator is showing RED????

I took the picture when both tanks were being filled.
