I think things are getting clearer -- I would bet that this was RV putty, which feels like plumber's putty. And I bet he thought that all butyl is butyl caulk, not butyl tape.

I am pretty sure I am going to use butyl tape. Yes, it is more expensive, but I have read that it does a better job of sealing, so why take a chance on something less expensive?
