Our shattered tempered glass overhead cab window (it said "tempered" right on the glass) did not break into relatively safe pellets. The little pieces were everywhere and were sharp - they could definitely cut the skin.
Here's my take: Winnebago used tempered glass because it was probably less expensive than using safety (laminated) glass. IMHO, safety (laminated) glass is what belongs there.
Of course, for other additional reasons I'll never buy another Class C with any window in the cabover bed - the forward facing ones or on the side ones. I would definitely like our forward facing cabover window to have some shielding/covering over it for our possible future trip to Alaska ... as a broken cabover window is trip altering in that it MUST be repaired correctly (for no water leaks) very close in time, and very close physically, to where it happens. I'm spending a lot of time thinking about how to protect it - short of having the Winnebago factory completely rebuild the cabover area to remove the window. I may just bite the bullet and cover the whole window with white Eternabond tape and not be concerned about resale value.
