Modified Sine wave inverter for seldom used microwave

The success with an MSW is not guaranteed and the microwave may run at a different "Speed" and in this I mean both the clock may run fast (or slow) and cooking time may need to be increased (or reduced) but .. it should work.

The Dometic "RV" MW that was OEM in the 1991 Class C we have now refuses to even start with MSW. Works fine with the PSW inverter.

The MW in the 2003 5er worked on MSW and so did a couple of other newer year MWs. Don't know if there was a change in MW technology in the 1990s to account for this.

It could be the classy brown woodgrain look on the 1991 that demands PSW!

EDIT the first MW I ever saw was in 1968. They had packets of brown stuff to put on chicken so it didn't come out looking so dead and white. :)

An advantage with MSW vs PSW to run the MW (assuming it will, although slower) is it draws fewer amps.

Eg, a "1000w" MW might pull 150 amps with PSW but 120 amps with MSW. I ran some tests a while back that showed to "cook" the same thing at the longer time, the MSW used fewer AH. The A being a bigger factor than the H.

Another result is at the lower amps, your voltage drop is less, so you don't hit the inverter alarm on low battery when you would with PSW. You could use fatter wire with the PSW though.

Previous threads on this mention the Panasonic inverter MW which has the advantage of running at lower power for lower settings instead of always at full power but more time off than on for lower settings.

That gets you the lower amps and AH too. It did come out that those MW don't like MSW, so you can't have both to get even lower amps but more time. That was a few years back, so it might be that those inverter MWs can run on MSW now, don't know.

We found that most times we wanted to use a microwave, it was just to heat up leftover coffee. Instead of bothering with the microwave, we found a small sauce pan on the stove works just about as quickly. Heating up leftover food also works well on the stove top.

After a while we got so used to the alternatives that we do not miss the microwave at all.

This is soooo much like the half ton vs HD arguments. Myself, I don't try to justify every expenditure, especially when vacationing or RVing. But I do prefer to do it once only.

Most anything can be heated another way if no microwave is available. We did not even have one in the house until I was a teenager and we got on fine without it long before that.
