For speaker cable- larger is better- there is a huge difference between #16 and #12, and yes, I (and many others) can easily hear that (of course, the system I was demonstrating it on was a triamped 2,000 watt per channel setup :). That has to do with damping, or the ability of the amp to *stop* the speaker from moving.
