mossing of the plates in lead acid batteries

Hi,

What is mossing of the plates?

What causes it?

What can I do to avoid it?

This is a good way to ruin a good battery, but this is a method to extend the life of an already badly sulfated battery by a few months.

I believe 'mossing' is a lay term for Sulfation. The normal chemical reactions that take place when a battery provides current is that the sulfur in the acid combines with the lead in the plates forming PbSO4 on the surface. When a battery is properly re-charged this Lead Sulfate is put back into the battery in the form of battery acid ( H2SO4) If a battery is not completely re-charged properly some PbSO4 will remain on the lead plates. This hardens over time and eventually covers the plates to such extent that you lose significant battery capacity and the battery will need replacement. Some devices used for charging batteriers can help in 'de-sulfation' of batteries ....the BatteryMinder model 12248 is one.
