DirecTV cannot "brick" a receiver. They can stop providing service to the receiver and they can provide replacements but the receiver will still be able to receive a DTV signal even if it can't be used to watch TV. It the low speed data port works and the receiver picks up a signal then the antenna will still lock on.
Mexicanpiloto: No matter where you go in N. America the DirecTV SD programming is sent from the same satellite located at 101W. If you have a clear shot it will pick it up. Where you run into issues in Mexico is the signal is aimed toward the US and can overshoot Mexico making the signal pretty weak depending upon your location.
