Mounting Exterior TV Mount

I have given up on trying to find a wall stud on the outside of the trailer. Stud finders, magnets, Knock test and pushing on exterior wall does not work. I would have to remove the refrigerator to find the studs on the inside and I am not going to do that.

What I was thinking of was mounting the TV mount bracket to the refrigerator wall vent. It is the perfect location for viewing.

Pros.. I would not have to drill holes in the exterior of the trailer and hope I find a stud. Also no chance of water getting in. There is a electrical outlet behind the vent that the frige plugs into I could easily make the a dual outlet for plugging in the TV. The vent is black and so is the mount so you would hardly notice it. If I decide to change it back later all I have to do is buy a replacement vent.

Cons... Just how much heat comes out of this vent when frige is on. I would only be running the frige on electricity.

32" TV weighs about 20lbs. Will the vent hold it? It's vertical weight so I don't think it will be a problem. TV won't be mounted when towing...

What do you think

Good idea. You can buy TV floor stands ready to go.
  • Frig will overheat and you won't have proper cooling , especially for the refrigerator which is what will get warm first. In hot weather, we have even had to add an additional fan in to circulate more air to keep the frig cold. I don't think you will want to block the openings that are there.
  • Mount the TV on a mailbox post and put it wherever you want. Think outside the box.
  • The mount I am planning on using is a flat mount. It does not articulate or pull away from the wall so no added stresses.
I thought of the storage idea but I would lose too much storage plus the TV would not be user the awning is that location.

If I was going to do this I think I would like the idea of mounting the outside HDTV on a swivel mount just inside the basement door area like shown here... You should get the same great viewing area...

    Google image

The inside wall here is very strong to support your biggest HDTV set... However the size of the HDTV should not be bigger than the access door to basement area. My idea here would be to make this a permanent install for the HDTV and be able to swing the HDTV back inside the basement and the swivel mount action would allow you to move the HDTV against the inside basement wall out of the way of storage items. Swinging the HDTV back inside the basement area could be done very quickly if a storm comes up pretty quick... This is also a great way to quickly secure the HDTV set if you had to walk away from the trailer. Just swing it around and close and lock the basement door... I'm guessing one downside here would be the appearance of the basement swing up door above the HDTV when being viewed. You would also be looking at the mess inside the basement all of the time as well hehe...

This image shows the HDTV more out from the wall but you should be able to swivel up against the inside wall...

I have had to get behind my Fridge on many occasions to do things and i would not like the idea of the HDTV attached to the Fridge vent door. It would have to swivel away from the vent door to allow you to remove the HDTV for sure...

I do have a 5th wheel but when I purchased it I was intending to tow it with my F150 Truck and we all know how that turns out hehe... The last words I heard was "Sure - your F150 won't have any problems towing this baby" My 5th wheel now sets in a camping area at the edge of my woods just after a couple hundred miles of white knuckle driving up and down I81 hills. I made it to Roanoke VA and turned around and came back home hehe... NO way would I have survived the hills south of Roanoke on I81...

My OFF-ROAD POPUP however gets used everywhere and again I need to get to the controls mounted behind the fridge panel. It also produces alot of heat from the built-in heater used to flow the coolant through the fridge coils etc... My OFF-ROAD POPUP trailer fridge runs on Electric-Battery-Propane...

Just some of my personal thoughts here...

I would mount 2 L brackets to the floor that the refer sits on and mount your TV bracket to them.
  • The wall vent takes air in, the heat exhausts through the roof vent. That being said unless you used an articulating bracket with arm to keep the TV away from the vent, you would be taking a chance of restricting the airflow, which would cause inefficient cooling. That takes you to the next issue. The vent cover is thin plastic and the top is held in place by two small tabs that slide into two holes. Its possibly the weight of the TV would eventually deflect the cover enough for those tabs to disengage, then your 32" TV will be on the ground.

Find the studs. It can't be that hard on a stick and tin trailer. Have you tried looking at the side on a cool morning when the side has condensation on it? You should be able to see every stud at the low flats of the siding profile as those areas will not have the condensation.

I can't imagine that by pushing firmly on the low flats of the profile you can not feel the stud locations. I highly doubt Dutchmen uses siding any thicker than .024 which is almost foil.
  • You may want to shop for a lighter tv, there are some 32 inch smart tv's now that weigh under 9 pounds.
