Multicolor LED conversion?

So I was looking at replacing my T8 flourescents with LED tubes, then I saw the video on YouTube about replacing the tubes with LED strip light (see below) THEN I thought...hmmmm

What if I get multicolored LED strip, install sections in each fixture (the factory wiring interconnecting the fixtures / strips) put the remote receiver at the first fixture in the circuit and have multicolored lighting that I can also dim?

Someone on Amazon commented that any fluctuation in 12v power would trigger the lights to change so I would have to deal with that.

Anyone tried this exactly?

Thanks!

  • Never mind, it won't work without adding wiring :-(

You have to have 4 wires as jumpers between sections, not two.
  • Yes, I have interconnected sections, but not in the manner you suggest. The multicolored strips use a 4-wire circuit, so the factory wiring will not work. The required wire is available, as are the connectors which snap onto the wire and the strips. So Yes it is possible, but not with the factory wiring. You may be able to snake the new wiring in place using the factory wires to pull it with, depending on how it is run. Should work, and as you can fine tune the color, you may be able to find a color that works for you. one work of caution, the cheaper strips tend to lose a color section occasionally. Using them inside should be better . Don't buy the cheapest ones. The tend to have some failures included.
  • I've done that with toe kick lighting- no problems with the controller getting confused yet. I'm not sure if the effect will be what you are looking for though- in order to really get a different colored light, you need to be seeing the reflected light, not direct, so I believe it would look like Christmas tree lights, rather than a single different color.
  • Thanks guys. I may try to fish the wires but will likely just go warm white in the ceiling fixtures and I may use multi-color under the cabinets or something.
  • I love the "Miami Vice" visual effects, tropical landscaping, white walls and fences outside. Inside? Turquoise lit canapes anyone?
  • With the multicolored LED strips, all the LEDS change color, so they are not actually multi-colored, but Variable-colored. The three colors are red. blue, and green, which are the same as used on your TV screen. White is all three together, and does vary a bit from what is called pure white.

I went with "Daylight White" but .. To each his own.

I am not so sure those 12 volt flucuations are as color changing as the other poster suggested. They would not be if I designed the system and I'm not all that good.

He meant that it would "trigger the switch" like from red to blue I assume.

I think I would prefer daylight as well but the boss prefers warm :-)
