I had a bearing fail about 15 miles from home (heading out). Same scenario- hub smoking, wheel wobbling but brake was OK. Limped to an auto parts and got replacement parts which I installed right there.
Yes it could have been worse. Yes you should carry spare parts and learn how to replace them before it happens again.
Wheel bearings are a perfect example of the benefit of preventive maintenance. Need to check for absence of wearing/scoring, adequate grease, proper adjustment etc.
I have since purchased an infrared thermometer to check hub temps, but your best insurance is to pull the wheels and LOOK before you leave.
