My Choice For Heavy Cable Electrical Wire

It's called DLO
Diesel Locomotive Wire Very Flexible
2,000 volt insulation
Far more cut resistant than premium marine cable or welding cable.

NEGATIVE POINTS Available in any color you wish as long as it is black.

Minimum length purchases.

Positive Points

Extra fine stranded, HEAVY tin plated copper.

Moisture shield between conductor and insulation

Available in larger than 4/0 sizes

Less expensive than marine cable

  • I hate how commodities SPECULATORS manufacture ZERO sit on their butt and drive copper prices to above three dollars a pound. I just purchased 200' of COPPER red and black paired 14 gauge for $30.00 absolute grand total, right to my mail dropoff. And I made a new tip for my Weller 200/260 soldering gun out of one ridiculously thick strand of copper out of a length of copper 2/0 building wire. It barely fit the gun bores but I pencilled it out as costing nine US cents.

By the way I just now purchased a new FIVE HUNDRED WATT LED light bar for $100.00 total. It will be sold. Forty amps current draw. Amazing how they sell FIVE HUNDRED WATTS of LED with 11 pounds of aluminum heat sink for 100 dollars. Try pricing a 500 watt floodlight sometime.
  • David, thanks for that EXCELLENT LINK you provided above!

I'll keep it in mind if I ever install a large inverter in the RV or want to reduce charging voltage drop between my RV's converter and it's batteries to - for all practical purposes - zero.
  • Welding cable is NOT good wire. It's not tinned and you can dang near slash the insulation with a butter knife. FLEXIBLE is what welders demand. The wire is going to be replaced every few years anyway. Check the voltage rating on welding cable. Is it 2,000 volts? Having your flexible and durable qualities usually means EXPENSIVE. Some of my Space Shuttle refit wire was sold for seventeen dollars an INCH. Ouch! Cheapskate bought it for fifty cents a POUND.

Price welding cable versus the locomotive cable in the link Mex provided. That Locomotive cable is much LOWER cost..

2awg in locomotive cable is $1.54/ft HERE , 2awg welding cable in my area will set you back $3.89/ft in my area..

Bought some 2/0 Xtra flex wire from Skycraft years ago for my inverter for LESS than what my local welding supply shop was selling 2awg welding wire..
  • This cable has cut resistant insulation. Cut open the middle of welding cable after 3-years. The copper strands will be brown or purple. This stuff stays shiny copper. The tin coating on marine wire is thin and turns dark. The tin on this stuff is thicker and stays bright. Welding cable is designed to be cheap because in industrial use it gets damaged. The price of this stuff is about HALF of welding cable. I don't buy "Chew & Spit" heavy cable or lugs.

Heck, when I get back to Michigan I may even have a source of that stuff CHEEP.

Here is a question: When to Diesels go headlight to headlight, Of course the first thing to go is said headlight.. Any idea what's second?
