You are right, a panel is like a spot light and a cob is like a regular light bulb. I prefer cobs in the ceiling fixtures because even the smaller units I use will evenly light the whole trailer. The panels I prefer in the task areas like the stove, sink and above the dinette so that the light is directed where I am working/reading. This way I get gentler over all lighting with the ability to have brighter where and when I need it.
That said, I agree that I would probably go with cobs now for the ease of install and lack of worry about the cheap tape releasing even though none of mine have. Then again seeing the 10 48 LED panels for under $19 shipped would have me doing the tape anyways.
Brightness and color are highly subjective for a few reasons. Every ones opinions are different as well as there are different incandescent bulbs with different watt ratings to deal with. My 48 1210 LED panel mimic the 921 bulb very well in color and brightness, but they are 1.4 watts. How many watts are your incandescent bulbs?
The best way to find what you need of course is the most expensive. Order a handful of different units and test them until you find what you like. Once you know what fills your needs, order the rest.
