If the steering gear was too tight, and the wheel would not self center coming out of a turn, somebody adjusted it too tight as it was worn.
When it was loosened back up, it is now even more worn as it was too tight, and it will wander all over on the highway, especially one without much crown and with no cross wind to keep it locked to on one side of the sloppiness
My remanufactured steering gear is a piece of sloppy junk. I wish I rebuilt the seals on my original one as it was way tighter.
everybody here is guessing what vehicle you actually have, I know you do not want to state exactly which for privacy purposes, but it will hamstring all responses.
I'd recommend a vehicle specific forum instead.
