Pink stuff... I not water.. So when it freezes it contracts, and thus it does not burst your bubble. or your plumbing.. So it's normal for it to freeze.
not true about water being the only compound exhibiting this odd behavior. Bismuth also expands when it solidifies. This property is rare, but not unique to water. Bismuth and often antinomy are used in typsetting because this compound, in the proper ratios also expands when solidifying and hence yields nice crisp type.
some data suggests silicon, and germanium expand when solidifying as well.
