Question: What is equalization?
Well, turns out it is a controlled overcharge of a battery.
Why do you do it?
Turns out there are two reasons.. One is because due to minor differences cell to cell it is possible over time for the cells to become less than equal in their state of charge,, Equalization fixes this, the second is also the next question.
What is Stratification?
Stratification is when the electrolytic solution stratifies, that is the solution in the BOTTOM of the cell becomes more concentrated and the solution in the top of the cell becomes weaker (more water like).
How does Equalization affect Stratification?
As the cell overcharges,, It boils some, this stirs the pot (Rather well in fact) bring the heavier concentrated acid in the bottom to the top and mixing it up well equalizing the cell top to bottom as well as the battery cell to cell.
Why did I type all this:
Hopefully it helps you to figure out what is going on.. If so, you are welcome.
