I used to be a Classic Starter Purist. Gimme an ACDelco, even the massive old FoMoCo with that goofy field winding that pulled the drive in. Let me at a pile of dead Delco's and I can make you a working one out of them. Field from this one, Drive from that one, This Armature, that Nose, etc etc. Then I started to experience the "new" Permanent Magnet Gear Reduction (PMGR) starters. Very few parts available for them and very little need. Darn miniature things just work and work and work!
One of the best things about PMGR is they weigh about 1/3 what a Delco weighs. That is SUCH a blessing trying to get one into place in a torture chamber like a boat's engine space.
