You could use the solar panel wired direct to the batteries but will have to monitor battery temps and voltage closely. If voltage gets too high, shade a cell or two to control the voltage.
My memory fails as to which member here has repaired a lot of converters but his posts indicated repairs were not that extensive, typically a component or two. IIRC, capacitor replacement was indicated in most repair efforts. That isn't something you can probably do on the road because you don't have a soldering station along. You could pull the charger section of the converter when you get home and see if repair is possible. In my experience, most consumer grade electronics are built with the cheapest components available and construction is hit or miss.
