Newer Converter Synopsis Summary

The total number of various models of converters discussed is mind-numbing. Partially "yes", conditionally, and riddled with caveats, make answers virtually unintelligible.

Here is a single simple question in enquiry...

Does a single model of smart converter exist that the consumer can set absorbsion voltage limit value

AND

Length of time spent at absorbsion limit before defaulting to float voltage? Like 30 minutes...one hour...three hours...?

Can have dingle dongle control. Doesn't matter. Adjustable Absorbsion voltage limit PLUS time spent at voltage limit max is what I am looking for.

Preferably in an 80-100 ampere device.

Thank You
  • I have looked and never found a converter or even a stand alone charger that allows you to "adjust" ANY lead acid battery charging voltages.
  • Most definitely not going to find them in modern consumer grade gear. The ability to adjust things more than likely means Joe consumer will adjust incorrectly and then injure himself or someone else. Either that or cause property damage, and either way, try to hold the manufacturer responsible.
  • GordonThree,

I blame apple for the dumbing down of our controls. And consumer reviews seem to be written at about a grade 5 level.

Then you haven't looked very far. I have had one since 2012 and have been posting about it ever since. (See photo from early 2013 eg. It is a 100 amper ADJ being powered by my Honda 3000 in the truck)

What Mex wants is one of those except with an adjustable timer for staying at Vabs too. (For set and forget I suppose) THAT is not (yet?) available in converters.

I don't need the timer. I have to stop the gen according to park gen time rules. On shore power that is not an issue. Mex is on shore power sort of.

They are out there now in adjustable voltages. Just no adjustable timers with that, like Mex wants. All the "LKs" have the adjustable voltage option as well as the standard automatic three or four stage option. It is the new thing! (Well, new since 2016)

  • Like Don said earlier, my Magnum ticks all the boxes and then some. Not as inexpensive as a stand alone converter, but also offers more features.

I used to have charging termination set to use the columb counter but have recently switched to timer based to see if there's any difference in available AH before hitting 50% SoC. Vabs is set to twelve hours and is centered at 14.4v but auto adjusts based on battery temperature.
  • Was it not the Magnum that has those issues between what its display reads and what its remote display reads so you get 80 amps instead of 100? If not Magnum, which one was that?
  • Hi BFL13,

The Magnum can be used without a shunt. When it is set up to do that it reads the "head" amperage. That is not as accurate as a shunt based system.
