What happened with mine was the little clip that holds the spring on the back of the check valve plunger came off. So what would happen was when I applied pressure to the tank and tried to run hot water the plunger would push out of the check valve and into the rubber at the next junction. Where it would then become a check valve for the other direction. Took about 10 minutes to replace the check valve once I got contortioned just right so I could get the old one loose.
