Norcold vs Dometic refrigerator

As I shop for an TT, does it truly matter with brand refrigerator doors would want or not want? Understood norcold had past issues, what year was their problem?
Thanks for you info. Tomm
  • Prior rig had Dometic, current rig had a cooked Norcold 2 door. I installed an Amish cooling unit, going strong for 4 years.
Absorption fridges been around for many years! Properly installed and vented and keeping the cooling fan(s) running on the backside you should get years of service. Proper/regular cleanings are also important.
  • We have owned 8 motorhomes that all had Dometic refers and they all cooled very well. In our current coach we have a large side by side and it cools as good or better than the previous smaller ones. Can't comment on Norcold as we've never had one.
  • From what I read in these forums, it seems like it's the larger size propane RV refrigerators that may be making for their sometimes bad reputations.

If so, maybe it's trouble keeping a larger volume cool using the absorption technology that is really the cause of the cooling and other problems ... especially the larger sized refrigerators that may be installed less than ideally.

Many owners of 6-7 cubic foot and smaller RV refrigertors report good service for years, and in all kinds of conditions. :h
  • Norcold AND Dometic had issues with cooling units leaking due to cost cutting measures (bean counters) and changing over from thick walled tubing to thinner walled tubing in manufacturing their cooling units (Dometic recall 1997-2006 & Norcold 1997 - 2010)

RV MFGs should also be held accountable for improper installations of Dometic & Norcold Absorption Fridges (failure to follow Fridge MFGs Installation Instructions----improper clearances, draft and ventilation)
That also lead to overheating conditions

    As for recalls.....
Name a vehicle mfg that hasn't had a recall..numerous recalls
  • Norcold is still having issues (FIRES) to this day even on the "repaired" units. I would never have a Norcold unit in my RV.
