The "Steam" coming out off the battery is/was very corrosive. Even if the battery survived (which I very much doubt) you should wipe down all the visible metal and almost everything else with a rag or sponge soaked on in baking soda mix.
It will be clear now whether it was the battery or the converter that failed. My bet is the battery.
