They have gone to a bastard standard that is half SAE half Metric and truly neither on many vehicles.
The USA is the only country still using the Inch, pound, seconds units of measurements everyone else has gone to Meters, Grams, Seconds. So the switch was made necessary to insure we could sell world wide.. I will not discuss the issues with that today.
The IPS system is also known as the "English" standard. but England switched to metric in.. as I recall... 1969 (there is a story here I'll omit)
We talked (and talked, and talked, and talked) about going metric starting in the 60's as well and at one point we actually posted dual metric/"English" signs (Like 88 KPH/55MPH) for things like speed limits.. but alas. we went back to the old IPS system of measurement 100% and finding metric signs is very rare now days.
We really need to go full metric
I carry a mixed tool bag.
