I have one of those "go anywhere, anytime", 4 season, self-contained truck campers w/ a/c, one slide and LP generator, approximately 19 1/2' in length. Camped comfortably in temps ranging between -8F and 104F.
------ OEM Propane Heater vs. Portable Ceramic -------
1.Pros: The LP furnace does the job, both inside and in keeping the holding tanks protected. Cons: It runs on propane, thus requiring more frequent refills. Propane costs, unlike regional gas prices, will vary significantly across town. Heaven forbid that you need propane from the only refill station within 50 miles of another one.
2.Pros: My little Pelonis ceramic heater keeps the camper pretty comfortable in temps down to freezing, it's quiet, and uses no propane. It's my heater of choice when I have electrical hookups and the temps are above freezing. Cons: Although small, it takes up space in a small camper, doesn't heat the holding tanks, and requires shore or generator power.
**How long will a 20 or 30 lb. propane tank typically last when heating a 18-20 ft TT in, say, 20-30 degree weather?**
Typically?? Not a clue. My highest usage was off grid with the LP generator in temps ranging from high 30s/day and low 20s/night. I used 30# in 4 days. Just remember that cold weather camping generates a lot of condensation. Use good ventilation while showering, cooking, and even while sleeping.
