I would think the proper way to attack this problem is to first remove the pan. Then dump the oil. Then you can be in a better position to drill the old plug out from either side.
You don't want to drill into the plug while on the Onan. Metal drill filings is not something you want in your crankcase.
With the pan removed, you can easily take it to a garage or machine shop to have the plug removed if you feel that its something that you don't want to attempt.
